My vet no longer carries Advantix II and instead recommended Activyl. I would like some personal stories before I use it. I'm in N. Activyl and Activyl Tick Plus - kills fleas, ticks, and probably ants too! It's pretty new and as a general rule I avoid new meds. Why is your vet no longer carrying Advantix a fine medication and why the switch to a new med?

I smell kickbacks from his saleperson.

Maybe a cruise, or a year's worth of steak dinners, or free meds for the vet for a year to resell at profit. Not kidding BTW. Good friend of mine is a vet. Seriously, I would want to know why and would not rely on any single person's recommendation, be they a vet or a consumer. Was there an issue with Advantix?

Cè fermento slitta al 20121, a natale nuova rassegna

Were they seeing resistant strains? Side effects? Cost differential? Quite frankly "I just decided to stop selling Brand X and am now recommending Brand Y" from my vet would mandate a whole lot of questions and answers from me. I'd be asking these questions of my veterinary service provider, who I PAY, way before I'd be asking them of random anonymous people on teh interwebs.

I have not witnessed any side effects. I used Vectra before, but it seemed to drive her crazy No fleas or ticks, either on the dog! Originally Posted by didee.

My Yorkie was placed on Activyl Tick Plus. It has been a week since his first treatment and no signs of fleas. The only issue is that he is scratching a lot. I am waiting a few more days to see if this subsides before calling his Vet. I've been using activyl now for my pets because it was able to be purchased at our local shelter. My only complaint is it seems to work very well for only about 3 weeks so far, not really a full 30 days and unlike advantage, doesn't seem to quite kill off the flea population in the house.

I know that these meds aren't neccessrily to kill off flea pops in carpets and furniture but for whatever reason they always have worked for me in the past to kill fleas on my floors and wherever the cats lay. With activyl this doesn't seem to be the case. We still vacuum fleas up daily, who are very much alive. But its an awesome medication on the animal for the time it works. We applied a dose to our 3 cats on ;uly 12 and its now august 6 and we see healthy, active fleas on the cat again this week.

So we are appx one week short til the next application yet the fleas are back. I am considering going back to advantage to compare the two. This may result in reduced functionality and affect the graphical presentation of this site. However, all content will still be available. Dryden MW, et al.Activyl is a spot-on topical formulation for pets with the active ingredient indoxacarb, an antiparasitic agent that helps in killing ticks, fleas as well as their eggs and larvae, breaking their life cycle, and preventing reinfestation [1, 2, 4].

A recent study showed that flea infestation in pets could be effectively controlled by a single application of Activyl [5, 6]. Activyl for Dogs. Instead of reaching its bloodstream, indoxacarb works by bioactivation, a mode of action that changes Activyl into a highly insecticidal substance once it comes in contact with the amidase and esterase enzymes in the body of the tick or flea [3, 4].

So, when the susceptible insect comes in contact with the medicine, its brain, and ventral nerve cord stop functioning, eventually killing it [2, 3]. These effects are rare, and even when they occur, they usually disappear within a few hours to days without treatment [8]. However, if the symptoms persist, make sure to consult your vet. Talk to the vet if your dog or puppy has any known allergic reaction to any drugs, or if it is already receiving any medications or supplements [3].

Be sure to follow dosage as instructed by the vet and read the label directions before use. Each ml of the medication contains mg of indoxacarb. You need to get the right size applicator according to how big your dog is. You can reapply after a month, but never use more than one applicator within 30 days [3, 4]. Avoid grooming, stroking, bathing or shampooing your dog for 2 days after the treatment until the medication dries off completely [6]. The fast-acting topical solution starts killing fleas and ticks within 8 hours of applying, remaining effective for 30 days [4].

Because of its quick-drying, waterproof nature, it continues fighting against parasites even after bathing. Moreover, exposure to sunlight does not reduce its efficacy [7]. Activyl is possibly harmful when absorbed through the skin, inhaled, or ingested. Skin or eye contact may cause irritation and allergic reaction while ingestion may be hazardous to the respiratory and central nervous system [9].
